"XRR is a rewilding wing of Extinction Rebellion, with over 10K members. Our aims are to rewild and regenerate.
To plant trees. Create forest gardens. Rewilded landscapes. Encourage community permaculture and sharing. Reforest moors. Flourish wild inner landscapes.
We actively seek to reach out & collaborate with individuals and environment-focussed groups who share similar aims."
Rewilding Britain wants rewilding – the large-scale restoration of nature to the point it can take care of itself – to flourish to reconnect people with the natural world, sustain communities, and tackle the extinction and climate crises. [1] added 16:15, 4 May 2021 (UTC)

This approach is beginning to gain traction and is supported by, amongst others, the UN. [5]

Rewilding Britain[edit | edit source]

Rewilding Britain is an organisation founded in 2015 that aims to promote the rewilding of Great Britain. It is a registered charity in England and Wales, and also in Scotland.

One of the people involved in setting up the charity was Guardian journalist and author George Monbiot who published Feral, a book about rewilding, in 2013.Rewilding Britain has called for the reintroduction of predators such as lynx and wolves which were hunted to extinction in Britain centuries ago. Its proposals have been often opposed by farmers.

In 2018 the Prime Minister, Theresa May, launched a 25-year environmental plan which gave encouragement to Rewilding Britain by, for example, supporting the reintroduction of the beaver and recognising the pioneering achievements of the Knepp Wildland in lowland rewilding.

In 2020, Rewilding Britain called for natural regeneration to be incentivised by the future Environmental Land Management Scheme and to be made the default approach to woodland creation unless trees are unable to establish or would take too long to arrive.

Public attitudes to rewilding[edit | edit source]

In 2020, nature writer Melissa Harrison reported a significant increase in attitudes supportive of rewilding among the British public, with plans recently approved for the release of European bison, Eurasian elk, and great bustard in England, along with calls to rewild as much as 20% of the land in East Anglia, and even return apex predators to the UK, such as the Eurasian lynx, brown bear, and grey wolf.
